Filing an Income Tax Return (ITR) as a business owner, freelancer, or independent professional is fundamentally different from filing as a salaried employee. Instead of relying on a Form 16 provided by an employer, you are responsible for calculating your own net profit. This type of filing covers a wide range of individuals—from consultants, designers, and doctors to e-commerce sellers, gig workers, and traders. Because there is no fixed paycheck, the tax department requires a detailed account of your earnings and expenses to determine your true taxable income.
A Business/Freelancer return is comprehensive and often encompasses several distinct income streams:
Business and Professional Income: Income earned from providing services (freelancing, consulting, professional fees) or running a proprietary business.
Futures & Options (F&O) Income: Trading in F&O is not treated as capital gains but as business income. It requires maintaining detailed records of turnover, profits, and losses, and often requires a balance sheet and P&L statement.
Crypto and Virtual Digital Assets (VDAs): Income from the transfer of crypto assets is taxed at a flat rate (currently 30%), and these transactions must be meticulously disclosed. Losses from crypto cannot be set off against other income.
Interest and Capital Gains: Freelancers often have savings interest or investment gains that need to be clubbed with their primary business income.
